Well this is where I became confused. There is a part in My Soul to Take where Fana, who is now about eighteen, speaks about a year having passed and it is time to honor her commitment to Michel.

Pump the brakes! This takes me back to the beginning, because the story began around , which would make Fana about eighteen in the year , but only seven or eight during the Blood Colony era scratching my head.

Perhaps I secretly wanted the story to pick-up where it left off, and for Johnny to rush in and save the day. Is Ms. Due setting the stage for another installment, or is this really the end?

The story may not go in the direction we want it to go, but when we turn the last page there is still a yearning for more.

I truly wish that someone like George Lucas would pick-up this series and transform it into an epic trilogy. My Soul to Take will make for some awesome book club discussions, of which I would love to participate in one.

Maybe Ms. Due can put together a live on-line discussion similar to the Facebook live chats Oprah Winfrey conducted for her Lifeclass show.

This would give all of Due's faithful readers a chance to have an open dialog about the series, and this installment in particular.

I think it would be a huge success. My final rating for My Soul to Take is 3. The introduction began in , but chapter one was set in the year I feel so much better.

Still, I need to better understand what happened to make Fana concede on her demand for a ten year engagement…was it because Michel was playing dirty and casting down plagues, or was it his threats to begin the cleansing?

Maybe in a few months I will go back and reread My Soul to Take. If so, I will definitely reconsider my rating.

Much Love, Tracy www. Sep 06, Jessica Bronder rated it liked it. The story begins with Carlos. His mother went missing in Puerto Rico then he receives a phone call that simply said she was dead.

So Carlos goes to Puerto Rico to find out what is going on. Reluctantly agreeing to, while performing she finds that a lump in her breast is gon The story begins with Carlos.

Reluctantly agreeing to, while performing she finds that a lump in her breast is gone along with a stomach bug that Carlos picked up. The people in the audience are also cured.

We learn that Fana, an immortal that has healing properties in her blood, treated everyone at the concert.

But she took a risk to do so. The immortals are all former people that have been given blood to keep them immortal except for Fana and Michael.

They are the only two immortals that were born immortal. Although they are destined to marry, they have different feelings on humans.

Michael thinks that humans are a plague on this earth and has been using his blood to start all the different outbreaks of illnesses around the world.

Fana feels that they should protect everything and everyone so she has been trying to heal all the outbreaks. The story is mainly a conflict between Michael and Fana and within Fana about what she should do with her engagement to Michael.

There is a good basic plot but I got bored with the back and forth between Fana and Michael. I could not even finish the book.

It might have been a good book, but this one was not my cup of tea. Sep 18, Cheryl rated it liked it. Carlos Harris has just traveled to Puerto Rico after hearing the news that his mother is dead.

When Carlos arrives, he learns that his mother did not just death of nature cause but of something much worse. Bad enough that the government is trying to keep it under wraps.

The only thing Carlos knows is that the virus is air borne in nature. Phoenix Harris is a famous singer and wife to Carlos.

Phoenix is approached by a man named John Wright. Phoenix is reluctant at first but than Phoenix agrees to the concert. After Carlos and Phoenix meet Fana, they know there is no turning back.

Fana is to be engaged to Michel. Michel is ruthless and is the polar opposite of Fana. Instead of wanting to cure people, he would rather kill them.

Is Fana and her band of Life Brothers strong enough to defeat Michel? My Soul to Take is book four in the African Immortal series.

While, I have not read any of the prior books one through three in this series, I had no problem getting into the story and quickly catching up to speed to what was happening in the series.

My down fall to not having read any of the prior novels and of course this could just be me but I felt like if I had started at the beginning, maybe I would have been more connected to the characters.

Aside from this fact, I did like the story. The beginning started out at a good pace, than it got slow at times and towards the end it picked up again.

As they say, words can be very powerful. I will check out more of Mrs. My Soul to Take does have some bite to it. Apr 29, Nora rated it it was ok.

I found myself having to check to make sure I wasn't getting characters mixed up somehow. I just I seriously turned my nose up at how weak Jessica, Fana, and Dawit had become.

And then! To have this powerful enemy in Michel and everyone turns into compromising, weak willed pacifists??? I could not have been the only one waiting for Fana to sn This was so I could not have been the only one waiting for Fana to snap out of it, and become the powerful being that was hinted at in all previous books in this series.

I don't know what I was expecting from this book but it was a major let down Apr 18, Titilayo rated it it was amazing.

Oct 03, LaShaune rated it it was amazing Shelves: fiction , sci-fi , suspense. Tananarive does what she does best A masterful tale that keeps the reader engrossed from start to finish.

Even though I missed Blood Colony, this was easy to follow and so well written, I am going back to read Blood Colony and may just start from the beginning of the series.

Thank you for putting a beautiful end maybe to a beautiful tale. Oct 01, David Anderson rated it really liked it.

A very fine finale to the series, though I still think the first two books are the best, while this one is slightly better than the third, "Blood Colony".

One interesting twist here is the incorporation of characters from another Tananarive Due novel, "Joplin's Ghost", musician Phoenix Harris and her husband, Carlos.

My impression is that this worked well, although I have not yet read that novel and so was not previously acquainted with these characters' history a situation I now feel compelled to rectify very soon.

Highly recommended! May 17, Valaria rated it it was ok. I think I may have the first, and maybe only critical review of this book. I've been looking all over the internet for discussions and reviews but I haven't been able to find any.

Due herself, seems to have lapsed in excitement with this book, barely promoting it in her FB page when it was released. Im also ruffled because its a black author and I had such high hopes, and I loved the fact that I was supporting a black author, that she represented black women, that she was someone other than Toni I think I may have the first, and maybe only critical review of this book.

Im also ruffled because its a black author and I had such high hopes, and I loved the fact that I was supporting a black author, that she represented black women, that she was someone other than Toni Morrison or Octavia Butler, and that mostly all of the characters were ethnic, main characters were black or african.

You know how few black main characters there are in literature? Here I hit the holy grail. Were all of the books perfect? But with any journey, you expect to be led to a destination For four long books, you've gone through peaks and valleys, made left turns and right turns, got led up this steep hill, and then suddenly you're dropped off on the side of the road.

Then you're just standing there looking around like "this cant be it" "you're just going to leave us here?

Existential crisis like "where am I? I wish I hadn't read it, to be honest. The structural integrity of the characters was compromised in this book.

After reading the first three novels, the main characters were nothing like themselves previously. I felt that she had so much room in this book to develop Fana's relationships and explore her "gifts" but she missed the mark.

Unfortunately this novel did not live up to the previous three. The ending, quite frankly, feels like a middle or transition, not the climax.

I became more and more nervous as pages started to dwindle and the story hadn't progressed as Due led her readers to feel.

There was so much information in the front end of the book, that the lack of balance at the end felt clumsy and irresponsible. It felt rushed with very little thought put into tieing up the lose ends, the unanswered questions, and the final conclusion.

The ending feels like she was setting up to write another volume, but sadly she's stated numerous times that this is the final book in the African Immortals series.

Why create this world, and in your final book give us a sad little 5-page epilogue to conclude what should have been a marvelous climax. In order to process this book in a way that I could walk away partially satisfied, I had to re-read certain excerpts, disregarding whole sections of story lines.

If you read this book and I almost want to warn people to stop at book 3, knowing what I know now read it through the first time and evaluate how it makes you feel, if you feel it brings a solid conclusion to the series, then that is great.

She simply didn't belong in this book. Her character adds nothing but filler, as if Due had to reach a page quota. I don't know if Due didn't want to do any additional character development for My Soul to Take , or if she was drawn to a character from a book that has ZERO connection with the current novel and wanted to do more with her but didn't have enough content to write a sequel to Joplin's Ghost , but Phoenix's story line is clunky and doesn't go with the African Immortals.

It left me so saddened for a fictional character. His character shouldn't have been written if that is what Due had planned for him and us.

Good and Evil make a compromise view spoiler [ "Don't trade away the world population for good sex and flying lessons" hide spoiler ] Since closing the book for the first time, my head swirled with questions.

Did I miss something? Did the antagonist, Michel, somehow become a protagonist? Why did our main protagonist, Fana, change so drastically? Fana changes so suddenly in the last chapters that the readers wont even recognize her, especially if you've read the series and watched her character development from child to adult.

Still the reader is confused what to expect, will we get our old Fana back, or are we left with this husk of a shell that Fana has become?

Nov 02, Ryanreads rated it liked it. Jan 15, Anne added it. I was doing the audio version of this series and it was a real downer for the narrator of this book to be so drastically different from the previous books.

The pronunciation of some names was way off and how characters were presented vocally was really a stray from the others.

Either way, I'm glad it's over. Happy with the overall arc of the storyline and characters Due created. Just didn't love the difference in I was doing the audio version of this series and it was a real downer for the narrator of this book to be so drastically different from the previous books.

Just didn't love the difference in narration. Not to say this narrator was bad, just so different. Sep 28, Tawanda rated it really liked it Shelves: booktini.

The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because I felt compelled to do a little background research on the characters and I don't like my novels to have homework.

Sep 29, Vanessa rated it it was ok. I enjoyed this the least out of the immortal series. I am so use to Mrs.

Due making historic correlations throughout her writing. I'm still trying to figure out Phoenix's role in the novel. I simply loved the history in Joplin's Ghost, but found Phoenix's character irritating, and not plausible.

Apr 28, Thomas rated it liked it Shelves: , fantasy , dark. It's been a long haul to get through this series.

I started the first book at the end of January, and finished the last one days away from May. It also didn't help that I had to include Joplin's Ghost, which was another hefty book.

Speaking of Joplin's Ghost, the reason I read it was because the main character of that book, Phoenix, is a central character in My Soul to T It's been a long haul to get through this series.

Speaking of Joplin's Ghost, the reason I read it was because the main character of that book, Phoenix, is a central character in My Soul to Take, but I couldn't really see why.

Her character plays a role in Fana's story, but I couldn't see why it had to be Phoenix, as opposed to another character, even one that had already been introduced.

My guess is Due included her so readers would feel compelled to read her other book, like I did. As good as it was, I appreciate it, but it also aggravates me.

By now, so much has happened to change the core immortals from My Soul to Keep that it seems like they're all playing fast and loose with that immortality.

It seems like everyone's getting immortal now, which makes the whole premise less special. Granted, the story has shifted away from the immortals to Fana and Michel, who are now basically gods, and how they view the rest of the world.

The way the book ends means that Due could return to this series again, but I hope she doesn't. I think the more time she spends with the story, the more convoluted parts of the story become.

Bug and Alex decide to spy on Fang to see if Brittany has a crush on him. During their surveillance, Fang cruelly alleges that Bug had previously been in institutions for killing people.

Bug begins unwittingly imitating the rest of the Riverton Seven, including Fang. Penelope, having predicted the Ripper's return as well as their deaths, is the next one killed.

Brandon and Brittany discover her body in the woods and are both stabbed to death also. That night, Fang, who is revealed to be Bug's sister and going by her name of Leah, gives her brother a birthday present: a rocking horse created by Abel Plenkov.

Angrily, she unveils the truth that had long been hidden: that they are his children and she is the daughter he had failed to kill; Bug had survived in his dead mother's womb albeit born prematurely.

Everyone saw him as a miracle, which caused Fang to harbor lifelong resentment towards him; she had been traumatized by the event but he remained innocent of its memory.

The two reconcile, but are informed of the murders. Alex visits a distressed Bug and theorizes that the Ripper's evil soul jumped into one of the Riverton Seven, forcing them to kill off the others.

Downstairs, Bug and Fang encounter the Ripper. Just as Bug is about to be killed, the Ripper hears a noise upstairs. Bug goes back to his room, discovering Jerome, mortally wounded, in his closet.

After Jerome dies, Alex reappears and suggests that Bug inherited Dissociative Identity Disorder from his father, and had unknowingly killed everyone.

Bug rejects this idea. The souls of the dead Seven are now part of him, and together they help him deduce that Alex is, in fact, the one with the Ripper's soul.

He proposes that they kill Fang and pin the murders on Jerome to appear as heroes. Bug refuses, stabbing Alex in the stomach. Freed from the Ripper's soul, Alex dies as himself in a touching moment between best friends.

Although Bug expects to be arrested, Fang tells the police everything, clearing his name. The town proclaims him a hero. Despite not feeling like one, he narrates that he would "fake it good" in order to honor Alex's memory.

Henry Hopper, son of late actor Dennis Hopper , was originally cast in the lead role of Bug, but was replaced by Thieriot after Hopper contracted mononucleosis.

Paulina Olszynski plays Brittany Cunningham, who shares a mutual secret attraction to Adam. Nick Lashaway plays Brandon O'Neal, a "dashing, athletic jock" and "the handsomest boy in his school" who is attracted to Brittany.

Emily Meade plays Leah "Fang". Although many of the main scenes were filmed in multiple rural Massachusetts towns, with the majority of outdoor scenes by the river and covered bridge being shot in Kent, CT at Bull's Bridge, many of the high school scenes were shot in the then-vacant Tolland High School now Tolland Middle School in Tolland, Connecticut.

The film was shot in 2D. Because of the rising popularity of 3D films, it was post-converted to 3-D. My Soul to Take was theatrically released on October 8, , [17] with screenings in 3-D.

It had placed the record for the lowest opening of a 3D film released at over venues, claiming the record from Alpha and Omega until Gulliver's Travels [18] claimed the record two months later.

Despite the negative reviews, Wes Craven said he was really proud of the movie: "When you do a film like My Soul to Take and people think it sucks, that hurts.

Jan 05, The fact that this hasn't yet been picked up by the "shitty horror canon" cult is completely beyond me. Inept in the most hilarious and incoherent of ways, My Soul to Take is nearly two hours of a once renowned horror master flying off the rails in grandiose fashion.

Absolutely worth catching, unless this sort of schadenfreude-fueled spectacle isn't really your scene. Drew S Super Reviewer.

Dec 02, Wes Craven is a horror genius, but what the hell was he thinking when making this shit.

The plot of this was too boring and stupid to explain, the story scrambled up and has so many things happening that we simply just don't care what happens.

I mean, almost every scene had something completely retarded, whether it was cheesy moments or terrible dialogue. Oh yeah, the dialogue, I almost forgot, this film has some of the worst dialogue in film history, maybe worse than Star Wars The Phantom Menace.

In horror films I like dumb characters, but these characters were not dumb, they were stupid, annoying, and probably the worst cast I have ever witnessed in a horror film, if you've seen the film you know what im talking about.

The movie relies completely with jump moments that were not scary, the whole movie is one big annoying piece of shit that will not scare anyone.

Anyone who thought this was scary is going to have a lot of problems in life, what a terrible movie. Bradley W Super Reviewer.

Oct 23, You could view this movie as a dry run by Craven for his upcoming "Scream 4". If that's the case the Scream franchise is seriously screwed.

This movie is a mess, yet another by a once horror-master who just can't capture the zeitgeist anymore. The script is written by Craven himself and has the worst teen dialogue outside a Diablo Cody screenplay.

For half the movie I just didn't have a clue what these kids were talking about. For example the obligatory jock character gives our lead a dig in the ribs, referring to this as an "eight".

Later the obligatory bitch character says he should have made it a "twenty". Wes, you're in your seventies, don't try and be down with the kids, just do your own thing.

Of course Craven is partly responsible, thanks to "Scream", for the insistence on horror being aimed at the teen dollar. If you compare it to John Carpenter after "Halloween", he rejected offers of countless teen oriented slashers.

Since "Scream" Craven has made two awful sequels, the laughable werewolf movie "Cursed" and this turkey. If you were burying a time capsule and wanted to represent bad horror movies in the early 21st century this is the one to include.

It's so cliched that even the asian character is the first to die and nobody seems to notice he's missing from school the next day. There's a twist near the end that's completely redundant to anyone who paid attention to the opening sequence.

The kids are meant to be sixteen but all look You get the idea. If you've read my review of John Carpenter's "The Ward" you might think I have a problem with the seventies genre masters.

That's not the case at all, I'm just being hard on them because I know they can do so much better. Leave the kids to their "Twilight" franchise and just do your own thing guys, after all great horror is timeless.

That's because the latter was made by a director who didn't want to be hip, just horrific. The Movie W Super Reviewer. See all Audience reviews. Alex: Alex: Abso-fuckin'-lutely.

It is sometimes combined with the " Black Paternoster ", one version of which goes:. Four corners to my bed, Four angels round my head; One to watch and one to pray And two to bear my soul away.

The Doors performed a part of this prayer live in New York in as an added verse to their song Soul Kitchen. The prayer is also known for being used in the bridge of Metallica 's hit " Enter Sandman " from their eponymous album.

Also, Circle of Dust used edited version of this prayer in track "Prayers of a dead man" from their album "Brainchild".
